A&M Green Power - A History of Family Traditions
A&M Green Power Group, LC. was formed in June 2006 with the merger of two of the area’s oldest and largest family-owned John Deere dealerships: Athen Implement Inc. and Macedonia Implement Company, hence the name A&M. The two families along with Jeremy Ostrander united to form A&M Green Power Group, LC., now one of the largest John Deere dealerships in Iowa.
Macedonia Implement Company was started in 1899 by Charles McCready on main street in Macedonia, Iowa. The store sold both John Deere and McCormick Deering farm implements, along with other farm supplies like buggies, harnesses and windmills. Later Overland and Dodge cars were added. The decision to go with either John Deere or McCormick Deering eventually had to be made and the decision was John Deere. That decision has been a good one for five generations of McCreadys; Charles who died in 1940, his son Ralph (Cubby) McCready who died in 1977, and Ralph’s son Tom who died in 2001. Tom’s sons Shoan and Brien along with Shoan’s wife Melinda and their son Eric today hold management positions in A&M Green Power. Eric is a 1999 graduate of Graceland College and is the fifth generation of McCready’s to work in the dealership. Tom’s wife Sue and his sister Joan are involved in the business too.
Athen Implement traces its beginning to January 10,1941 when Orville Athen purchased the John Deere dealership from J.E. Good &Company. Orville started working in the dealership in 1936 while in high school to help pay out of state tuition since he lived in Missouri. In 1941 at the age of twenty-two, he purchased the Hamburg location. He is believed to be the youngest person to be awarded a John Deere contract. Orville married his wife Jean in 1943 and the two worked side by side in the dealership. Their son Don joined the dealership in 1972 upon graduation from the University of Iowa. He married his wife Jody in 1976 and she is an integral part of the family business. The business was incorporated in 1978 with Don becoming the president. Orville stayed active in the company until his death in 2004, having spent over 60 years in the business. Don and Jody today hold management positions with A&M Green Power.
Both the McCready and the Athen families have always had the vision of providing quality equipment, fair prices, cutting edge technology and the highest standard of customer service with family traditions. Throughout the years both families were able to change with the times. They have bridged the era from horse drawn equipment and steel wheeled tractors to satellite guided tractors, combines, and sprayers by staying on the leading edge of technology and innovation. In 2004, the Athen and McCready families started looking to what is the next step in keeping their business on the cutting edge. This is when they started talking about joining forces to bring the best level of services to their customers. Jeremy Ostrander was brought into the business to help facilitate this move.
Jeremy Ostrander is the other founding member of the A&M Green Power Group. Jeremy is a 1995 graduate of Kansas State University. He spent eight years working with the John Deere Company in product development, planning and marketing for the Seeding Division and most recently as a Territory Manager in central Illinois covering the central part of that state from the Mississippi River to the Indiana border. He has brought a spirit of invigoration to the organization. Jeremy and his wife Tamera are both involved in the business. Jeremy is the sales manager and Tamera is A&M Green Power’s Advertising and Marketing Manager.
In June 2006, the newly formed A&M Green Power Group was created officially with the merger of Athen Implement, Inc. and Macedonia Implement Company and the acquisition of the Malvern and Red Oak locations from the former Southwest Iowa Equipment, combining four locations together.
In May 2007, Cass County Implement, the Plattsmouth, Ne. location, acquired from Dick Hauptman. The Hauptman family had operated the dealership for twenty years. Today, Dick’s son, Rick, is a leading salesmen for A&M Green Power.
June 2007 brought McCunn Equipment Co. into our group. Don and Lowell McCunn, both graduates of Iowa State University began their careers as engineers at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works. Don began his career at Deere in 1961, joining older brother Lowell who was already employed there. In the fall of 1963, the two brothers purchased a part interest in the John Deere dealership in Waverly, Iowa. McCunn Implement Company began in October 1964, when Lowell and Don purchased the John Deere dealership in Greenfield, Iowa from Harvey Conard. Don moved to Massena, Iowa in 1972 to operate a service center for the Greenfield store. In March of 1976, the Massena location became a separate, full dealership operated by Don and formed McCunn Equipment Co. Randy McCunn joined his father Don in the business in 1975 and brother Kevin joined the business in 1980. Randy and Kevin took over from their mother and father and have managed the business until the merger into the A&M Green Power Group. Randy and Kevin today hold management positions with the new group.
